Career advice People with a history of atopic or hand eczema need to consider carefully their choice of career and this is better done while still at school. Many individuals with a background of eczema run into problems if they want to undertake certain occupations - see below for a list of potential problem jobs. Pre- employment screening can identify at risk workers and early job counselling may prevent occurrence of irritant contact dermatitis in those people at risk of developing it. A perfume has many chemicals within it, some of these may sensitise. Allergy to perfume is the commonest cause of ACD to cosmetics and toiletries. Preservatives/biocides cosmetics and toiletries will nearly always contain preservatives. Preservatives are also found in topical medicaments such as creams, steroids, lotions, eye and ear drops. Many industrial chemicals also need preservatives.
