Abstract: . . .  Therapies Topical Cor ticosteroids Topical corticosteroids have long been the mainstay in management and are the first-line anti-inflammatory treatment for AD. They are the standard of care to which other treatments are compared. Unfortunately, most patients and families, and many healthcare providers, are concerned about topical corticosteroid use. 25 Adverse effects of topical corticosteroids include atrophy, perioral granulomatous dermatitis , acne, telangiectases,erythema,and hypopigmentation.Ocular effects can include glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and cataracts, and systemic absorption may result in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression. 26 However, when used correctly, clinically significant adverse effects are rare. 2729 The patients age, disease severity, and distribution of disease should guide topical corticosteroid choice.  . . .
